Winter in Senegal…

Finally, it’s winter time! Also known as “the cold season”. It might sound unbelievable, but mid-November a strong wind suddenly started blowing for about three days. The kind of wind which you can hang on to, unfortunately that would mean you’d find sand in your ears and nostrils for the coming time…

Anyway, to proof to you all dear readers that winter has really begun here in Senegal, I present to you some clear, empirical observations that will convince any sceptic that winter is here!

You realize it’s winter when:

1. you can walk the kids home from school (20 minutes) without melting on the way…
2. a cold shower is no longer a welcome refreshment, but an unpleasant necessity…
3. you put on socks in the morning…
4. you turn your wardrobe topsy-turvy only to realize you really brought only one sweater…
5. the laudry dries in less than an hour (thanks to the low humidity)
6. your hair gel hardens again (instead of always being slimy…)
7. you put on a t-shirt under your shirt
8. you suddenly realize how quiet it is in the house, because the fans are no longer blowing all day long…
9. Maria insists on wearing gloves when going to school…
10. your calluses cracks bloodily due to an overly dry skin…
11. the kids shiver from cold in the outside playing pool…
12. your guests ask if they can please put their shoes back on, as the tiles are so cold on their feet…

If you’re still not convinced of the extreme cold we’re facing in winter times, I no not what to say more 🙂

But how long this wonderful winter is going to stay with us is another question, as last week Maria came home from school saying: “it was so hot today that the sun even came in the shade!
