Classmates

Kids“Hassan, Abdou Rachman, Fatou, Aminata, …” now Simon begins to talk some more, he names all his classmates (and those are not the easiest names). He often plays with Abdou and Fatou, and Aminata gives him a hug every morning. The little Senegalese girl with beautiful colored beads in her hair is fond of Simon.

Simon likes going to school and when we ask what he has done, he always replies: “singing, playing, playing outside, eating.” He is the only white child in the school, so we never have to search long to find him. After the summer he’ll go to the same school as Maria, so his class will be more mixed.

Maria now knows for sure who her best friend is: ‘Rose’. When I ask why she answers, “because she always listens to the teacher.” It is a sweet girl indeed, but a full head taller than Maria. Because most children stay with their nanny in the afternoons, there aren’t many occasions for playing together. We try to compensate during holidays as well as on the many birthday parties.

Maria knows flawlessly which language to choose. She speaks French with one, and switches to English for an other friend. All this seems so natural to her. Maria will certainly miss her classmates when she’s in the Netherlands!
